Consumer prices increased 0.4 percent in August 2026 and 3.4 percent over the year. Gasoline rose 3.9 percent and accounted for more than one third of the monthly increase.

Customers experience those numbers through household budgets, not economic tables. A business changing price enters that same budget conversation.

The worst explanation is no explanation. A new price that appears without context can feel arbitrary even when the underlying pressure is real.

Explain what is changing, when it changes, and what remains protected. Avoid turning every supplier movement into a customer surcharge. Show the value, service level, or continuity the price supports.

Give frontline employees a clear answer and an escalation path. If they cannot explain the change, the customer becomes the first person asked to reconcile the company’s economics.

Pricing is an operating decision. Communication determines how the customer experiences it.
