Producer prices for final demand increased 0.4 percent in August 2026 and 5.4 percent over the year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

The broad number matters. The route matters more. Final-demand goods rose 1.1 percent, with energy up 4.2 percent. Diesel fuel jumped 24.1 percent, while transportation and warehousing services also increased.

Those costs do not arrive everywhere at once. They move through freight contracts, supplier quotes, fuel surcharges, inventory turns, and renewal dates.

Trace the exposure before changing customer prices. Identify which inputs moved, which contracts can adjust, how much inventory remains at the old cost, and when cash requirements change.

A blanket price increase can miss the actual pressure. So can waiting for the income statement to confirm what purchasing already knows.

Inflation is a headline. Cost transmission is an operating process.
